Bernardston Emergency Management is responsible for coordinating the preparation and response to larger-scale incidents that might take place on the local, state, regional, and national levels.
Its activities are conducted in accordance with the National Incident Management System.
Coronavirus / COVID-19 update
Members of our National Guard delivered medical supplies provided by Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.
As of May 28, 2020:
- Based on the most-recent notifications from the Department of Public Health, the total number of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 in Bernardston is between eight and 10. At least several of these cases appear to be related to the individuals being connected in various capacities to area health-care facilities. Information about outcomes of these cases has not been made available.
- On May 18, the Baker-Polito administration announced Reopening Massachusetts, a four-phase program designed to lead Massachusetts to a “new normal.” While a degree of uncertainty remains, there is specific guidance available on the following website: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/reopening-massachusetts

Code Red emergency notification system
In 2016, Bernardston Emergency Management assumed responsibility for the Code Red emergency notification system that had once been managed on a regional basis. The system enables town leaders to issue recorded messages to residents’ telephones as the need arises.
As part of the transition from regional to local, the land-line telephones of Bernardston residents and businesses have remained in the system. In addition, Bernardston residents are welcome to add cell phones and phone numbers of caregivers to the system, even if the caregiver is not a Bernardston resident.
